Milos is a volcanic island with some of the most extraordinary beaches in Greece. From lunar landscapes that look like something from another planet to long stretches of golden sand lapped by turquoise water, the island offers a beach for every mood. Many of these beaches are only a short drive from Kemelia Suites, making it easy to explore several during one stay. This guide highlights seven of the island’s most memorable beaches and what makes each of them special.

Sarakiniko, A lunar landscape on Earth
Imagine stepping onto a beach and feeling like you’ve landed on the moon. Sarakiniko, on the northeast coast of Milos, delivers exactly that sensation. The beach is famous for its chalk‑white rock formations that have been smoothed and sculpted by time and weather. The stark contrast between the bright rocks and the azure sea makes Sarakiniko one of the most photographed beaches in Greece. Locals say pirates once used Sarakiniko Bay as a hideout, and you can still find a partly exposed shipwreck in the area. There isn’t much shade here, so arrive early or late in the day and bring sunscreen and water. For the adventurous, there are cliff‑jumping spots into the deep waters. If you prefer to relax, a small sandy area sheltered by a peninsula offers calm water and is perfect for a swim. Sunrise and sunset are particularly magical, at sunrise you’ll likely have the place to yourself, while sunset bathes the rocks in pink and orange hues.

Firiplaka, Colourful cliffs & turquoise waters
On the southern coast of Milos lies Firiplaka (sometimes spelled Fyriplaka), a long bay with shimmering turquoise water, golden sand and cliffs colored in shades of orange, pink and white. A massive rock emerges from the sea in the middle of the beach, hiding an archway you can swim through. Despite its popularity, the beach is long enough that you can always find a spot to yourself. Firiplaka is protected from the strong meltemi winds that blow across the island in July and August, making it a good choice when other beaches are windy. The beach is organized, with sunbeds, parasols and a small bar for refreshments. It’s easily accessible by car (about 20 minutes from Adamas) or by bus, though buses are infrequent. Don’t miss the short walk over the headland to neighboring Tsigrado beach.

Tsigrado, A secret cove reached by ladders
Hidden between tall rock walls just south of Firiplaka, Tsigrado is a tiny cove of clear turquoise water. Getting there is part of the adventure: you descend through a narrow crack in the cliff using ropes and ladders. It may sound daunting, but many beach‑goers make the climb every day. Once you reach the sand, you’re rewarded with a sheltered bay surrounded by caves, rock arches and calm waters. Because the beach is small, it can feel crowded at peak times. Arrive early and bring a snorkel mask to explore the underwater caves. If climbing down a ladder isn’t your idea of fun, you can visit Tsigrado by boat or kayak from Firiplaka. The beach has no facilities, so pack water and snacks.

Kleftiko, Pirate caves & crystal‑clear waters
Perhaps the most iconic spot on Milos isn’t a beach in the traditional sense but a dramatic complex of sea caves and natural arches. Kleftiko, on the island’s remote southwest tip, consists of large volcanic rocks that form three small bays shaped by thousands of years of erosion. The unusual landscape has earned Kleftiko the nickname “Meteora of the Sea”. According to local lore, the bays were once a pirate hideout; the name “Kleftiko” comes from the Greek word for “bandit’s lair”. There isn’t a sandy beach here, but the crystal‑clear turquoise water is perfect for swimming, diving and snorkeling. You can explore numerous caves by boat or while swimming. Kleftiko is accessible only by boat; daily excursions depart from Adamas and other ports, or you can rent a private vessel. If you’re comfortable in the water, bring a mask and fins to see the marine life. Most tours also combine Kleftiko with nearby Sykia Cave or Gerakas beach.

Paleochori, Warm waters and volcanic colors
Widely regarded as one of Milos’ best beaches, Paleochori stretches for several kilometers and is divided into west, central and east sections. The beach features crystal‑clear water lapping at dark sand and brightly colored pebbles. Underwater mineral springs heat the sea in certain spots, creating natural warm pools. The imposing red and orange cliffs surrounding the beach testify to the island’s volcanic origin and add a surreal backdrop. Some rocks even contain sulphur and other minerals that colour the landscape. Paleochori has a lively atmosphere, with tavernas, beach bars and a variety of accommodation along the shore. If you want to experience the beach’s thermal properties, look for pockets of hot sand where locals cook food. Buses run from Adamas during the summer and the beach is about a 20‑minute drive away.

Firopotamos, A fishing village by the sea
On the northwestern coast of Milos, Firopotamos (also spelled Fyropotamos) offers a tranquil bay framed by traditional boat houses. The beach is a mix of sand and pebbles and is shaded by trees. The sheltered bay features brilliantly blue water and quaint white houses lining the shore. These houses, called sirmata, were once used by fishermen to store their boats; some have been renovated into beautiful seaside apartments. There are a few sunbeds and a small snack bar, but the main attraction is the peaceful atmosphere and the chance to wander the narrow lanes of the old village. The beach is accessible by car or scooter; the drive from Adamas takes about 15 minutes, and there’s no public bus service

Achivadolimni, A family‑friendly sandy beach
Located in the middle of Milos Bay, Achivadolimni (also spelled Chivadolimni) is one of the island’s longest beaches. Its name means “clam lake,” inspired by a nearby lake teeming with marine life. The beach features sparkling golden sand and shallow, crystal‑clear waters, making it ideal for families with young children. Northern winds can create high waves here, so it’s also a popular spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Achivadolimni is partly organized, with a tavern, a beach bar, umbrellas and sunbeds on one side, and a quieter, more natural section on the other. The beach is easily accessible by car or bus and has parking nearby.
Tips for enjoying Milos’ beaches
Rent a car or atv
While some beaches are accessible by bus, having your own vehicle makes it easy to visit multiple beaches in a day. Drive carefully – some roads are narrow or unpaved.
bring water, snack & shade
Many of the beaches have limited facilities, so it’s wise to pack essentials. A beach umbrella is useful for spots like Sarakiniko, which offers little shade.
Plan around the wind
Northern winds (meltemi) can make north‑facing beaches choppy. On windy days, head to the south coast (Firiplaka, Tsigrado, Paleochori) for calmer water
respect the nature
Milos’ unique landscapes are fragile. Stick to marked paths, avoid climbing on delicate rock formations and take your rubbish with you.
An experience you’ll never forget
The facilities are very good. It is a luxury to be able to enjoy a private pool.
Both Dimitra and Evangelina have been very kind and attentive to everything we needed.
What an amazing stay! Dimitra and her husband were the perfect hosts! Kind, helpful, generous, dependable people. From providing foods and drinks to helping me with car trouble, to ensuring the cleanest and most comfortable stay every day and night. The suite itself is brand new and incredibly beautiful. Your own private pool and sun bed will make you want to spend days relaxing in the suite. A great little kitchen set up outside also. Very short drive to all towns in just a few minutes. I cannot wait to come back with friends and family to stay again. I truly had the most wonderful time. Thank you Dimitra.
